Epidemiological Observation on the Gastrointestinal Diseases in Korea

Abstract
A statistical study was performed on the 2, 091 cases of liver disease, 405 cases of biliary tract disease and 696 cases of pancreatic disease who had been admitted to the department of Gastroenterology, Woo Sok Hospital, Korea University College of Medicine from January 1960 to October 1975.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. The highest age incidence of liver disease was seen in 41-50 years (27.43%). Male was predominated in all of these groups showing the male to female ratio of 1. 3 : 1 for acute viral hepatitis, 1.9 : 1 for chronic hepatitis, 2. 7 : 1 for liver abscess, 2.7 1 for liver cirrhosis and 3.0 : 1 for hepatoma.
The mean age of hepatoma were 49¡¾11 years in male, 52¡¾12 years in female and that of acute viral hepatitis was 32¡¾11 years in male, 35¡¾13 years in female.
The most common complaints in liver disease were general fatigue with anorexia and abdominal pain with right hypochondriac discomfort which were seen in 53% and 52%, respectively. In 12% of hepatoma and 3% of liver cirrhosis, there were loss of the body weight.
The shortest passed time from t he onset of disease to the date of admission was 14 days in 69% of acute viral hepatitis and the longest elapsed time to admission was ranged rom 22 days to 2 months in 38% of hepatoma.
Acute viral hepatitis showed the highest seasonal incidence in June and July.
2. The highest age incidence of biliary tract disease was seen in 41-50 years(25.50%). Female was predominated in all of these groups, revealed male to female ratio 0. 6 : 1 for biliary dyskinesia and 0. 7 : 1 for acute cholecystitis.
The mean age of biliary dyskinesia were 37¡¾11 years in male, 45¡¾12 years in female and that of acute cholecystitis were 44¡¾14 years i s male and 45¡¾14 years in female.
The most common complaints in biliary tract disease were abdominal pain with right hypochondriac discomfort and general fatigue with anorexia which were seen in 97.5% and in 36% respectively. Acute cholecystitis showed most frequent occurrence in September.
3. The highest age incidence of cute pancreatitis was revealed in 31-40 years (29.20%) and that of pancreatic carcinoma was in 41-50 year (53. 00%).
The male to female ratio was 0.6 1 for acute - pancreatitis and 2.3 : 1 for pancre ticrcinoma.
The mean age of acute pancreatitis as 37¡¾12 years in male, 38¡¾14 years in female, and that of pancreatic carcinoma was 52¡¾10 , years in male, 48¡¾5 years in female.
The most common complaints in acute pancreatitis were pain in left hypochondrium and epigastrium which were seen in 100% and those of pancreatic carcinoma were general fatigue with anorexia which were noted in 74%.
In 23% of pancreatic carcinoma revealed the loss of body weight.
In January and August frequent occurrence was noted.
